In the latest Spotlight, we sit down with Ainoa Cuberos. Currently based in Cardiff-by-the-Sea surfer, she's a Licensed NLP Coach, Hypnotherapist, and Reiki Practitioner who sees the ocean as one of life’s greatest classrooms for human potential. Ainoa’s path wasn’t always lined with surf sessions and coaching. After a decade-long career in corporate marketing at Nestlé, a profound personal loss led her to re-evaluate what success and legacy truly meant, ultimately inspiring her to leave it all behind in 2021 and commit to a more aligned life.

Today, Ainoa blends neuroscience-backed tools with intuitive practices to help people rewrite limiting inner narratives, dissolve fear, and step into greater presence, both in the water and in everyday life. For her, surfing is more than a pastime; it’s a natural form of therapy and an honest mirror, teaching patience, resilience, and surrender.

In this conversation, Ainoa shares how the ocean shapes her mindset, the power of supportive community, and why learning to trust the process—like committing to a wave—can transform everything.

Q. Can you briefly introduce yourself?

Ainoa - Hi! I’m Ainoa Cuberos, a Licensed NLP Coach, Hypnotherapist, and Reiki Practitioner based in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. At my core, I am a surfer driven by a deep fascination with human potential.

My mission is to help people “uninstall” the weight of negative memories and limiting beliefs. I guide individuals to break free from repetitive thought patterns and dissolve fear so they can reconnect with their inner strength. My goal is simple: to help you move with purpose and clarity, creating a life that actually makes you excited to wake up every morning.

My method is where science meets intuition. By combining neuroscience-based tools with intuitive work, I help my clients embody confidence and flow, both in and out of the water. I’ve found that real, lasting change happens when we stop overthinking and start transforming the root patterns of how we feel.

Q. What is NLP? How do you explain it to someone who’s never heard of it before?

Ainoa - NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, is like understanding the user’s manual of your mind. It explores how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are connected, and how to consciously shift them so they start working for you instead of against you.
Think of it as mental training. Just as athletes train their bodies, NLP trains your mind. It gives you the tools to transform fear, pressure, or self-doubt into a state of calm, confidence, and flow.

The real breakthrough happens when your brain starts relating differently to the challenge. You realize it’s rarely the wave, the high-stakes meeting, or the pitch that’s the problem, it’s the internal narrative you’ve built around it. NLP allows you to rewrite that story. When you change your internal relationship to the challenge, the external result follows.

Q. What first drew you to NLP coaching and hypnotherapy?

Ainoa - I’ve always been a naturally curious soul. Long before I was a coach, I spent years wondering why some people thrive through challenges while others feel stuck, which led me to dive deep into psychology and neuroscience on my own.

For a decade, I applied that curiosity to a successful career in corporate marketing. My job was to understand human behavior to influence others, but eventually, I realized that the most important "marketing" is the one we do internally.

The turning point was deeply personal. During my last year at Nestlé, I lost my best friend in a car accident. That loss shattered my perspective and made me ask: "If I died today, would I be happy with the legacy I'm leaving?" The answer was no. NLP and Hypnotherapy became my bridge; they were the tools that allowed me to stop overthinking and start living from a place of presence and purpose.

Q. In 2021, you left your corporate role at Nestlé. What gave you the courage to take that leap?

Ainoa - The courage didn’t come from having everything figured out; it came from the realization that the pain of staying the same was finally greater than the fear of changing.
I had reached what society calls “success,” but I was paying for it with my peace. Seeing how quickly life can change after my friend's passing gave me a brutal clarity: I didn’t want to just "function" anymore; I wanted to live in alignment.

For me, courage was about choosing truth over comfort. I decided to take everything I had learned about mindset, leadership, and human behavior and use it to help others grow without losing themselves in the process. Success means nothing if it costs you your soul, and I was finally ready to commit to the drop and create a life I actually felt good living.

Q. You work with people from many backgrounds, including a strong focus on women. What does that focus mean to you, and what do you hope women gain from your coaching?

Ainoa - Actually, I don’t choose my clients based on gender, but on their readiness to change. I work with both men and women, and I truly enjoy the unique energy each brings to the process. However, statistically, I’ve found that women are often the ones who more consistently choose to invest in their personal growth, which has naturally shaped a large part of my practice.

What this focus means to me is helping people reconnect with their inner authority. In my experience, women in particular have often been conditioned to doubt their intuition or seek validation outside themselves. My hope is that through our work, they gain a profound sense of self-trust and clarity.

I’m helping them remember the strength and flow that was already there before the world told them who they should be. Ultimately, I work with anyone ready to meet themselves authentically.

Q. Surfing can be a mental sport as much as a physical one. How do you see surfing benefiting people in their lives?

Ainoa - Surfing is one of the most powerful personal-development teachers I know. It builds patience, resilience, trust, and surrender, the four essential qualities we need to grow in life.

The ocean is a perfect mirror of your inner state: if your mind is tense, the water will show you; if you breathe and trust, you flow. The progression in surfing is slow, and that’s exactly why it’s so transformative. It forces you to practice presence, rewiring your relationship with challenge.

For many, surfing becomes a gateway to deep empowerment. It’s not just about riding waves; it’s about the mindset of commitment and the realization that you are capable of far more than you think. When you learn to surrender to the flow of the water, you learn to move through life with more certainty.

Q. What role does surfing play in your life, and how has it shaped your community?

Ainoa - Surfing is my anchor. It’s the practice that forces me back into my body when my mind starts overthinking. In my lowest moments, movement, and especially the ocean, is what kept me afloat. There is something almost sacred about the wordless communication between a surfer and a wave; it’s a space where logic stops and intuition takes over.

I’ve always loved the paradox of surfing: it’s both a solitary meditation and a social experience. There’s a very specific, raw joy in catching a wave and hearing your friends celebrate it from the shoulder, it makes the experience feel more "real."
This is why I value communities like First Light Surf Club. They create spaces where you don’t have to perform; you are seen and supported simply by showing up. It’s about finding a tribe that speaks the same silent language of the sea.

Q. How does going for a surf and being in the ocean affect your mood and well-being?

Ainoa - The ocean is the ultimate reset. No matter what is weighing on my mind before paddling out, the moment I’m in the water, it feels like my nervous system finally exhales.
There is a raw honesty in the salt and the movement that pulls you into the present instantly. The ocean doesn’t judge, rush, or demand; it simply invites you to be there. Some days it humbles you with its power, and other days it carries you with its stillness, but it always grounds you.

For me, it’s the most natural form of therapy. It clears the mental noise and recharges my energy in a way that nothing else can. It doesn’t just change my mood, it brings me home to myself.

Q. In building your coaching career, what has been the most surprising lesson in the journey? The most challenging?

Ainoa - The most surprising lesson has been realizing how deeply your external world mirrors your internal one. Whether it’s your business, your relationships, or your opportunities, they all expand exactly when you do. When your internal state shifts, the results follow in ways you couldn’t have planned.

The most challenging part? Trusting during the "quiet seasons." Those moments when you’ve planted seeds but can’t see the results yet. I’ve had to learn that these pauses aren’t failures; they are integration phases.

Just like the ocean has its lulls between sets, life has its own rhythm. Staying grounded and committed during those quiet moments is where the real growth happens. Every time I’ve chosen to trust the process instead of forcing it, something better than I imagined has unfolded.

Q. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Ainoa - It’s seeing people remember who they are.

There is nothing like witnessing the moment someone shifts from fear to freedom, when their eyes light up and they realize they actually have influence over their thoughts and their direction. I’ve seen people drive again after years of panic, return to the ocean after being paralyzed by fear, or finally launch the business they’d been holding back for years.

To me, that’s the essence of this work: guiding people back to their own power. It’s a privilege to watch someone realize they aren't actually "stuck", they just needed the right tools to rewrite their story. Every time I see a client move from overthinking to flow, I’m reminded that we are all capable of profound transformation.
