THE SEARCH FOR VOLCANO ISLAND // A Fielder Films Production
La Paloma Theater, a cultural gem of Encinitas, has been captivating audiences since its doors first opened in 1928. Over the years, it has played host to countless films, but there’s something special in the air when the theater rolls out the red carpet for a surf movie premiere. The combination of history, community, and a love for the ocean creates a unique and electric atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else.
This past Saturday, September 7th, La Paloma was once again the center of excitement as Ben Weiland and Brian Davis of Fielder Films held the hometown premiere of their latest surf documentary, The Search For Volcano Island. The film, which takes viewers on an epic journey through the rugged and isolated Aleutian Islands of Alaska, follows a group of friends as they board a boat in search of uncharted surf. What awaits them is nothing short of breathtaking: frozen landscapes, frigid waters, and never-before-ridden waves hidden among some of the most remote and inhospitable corners of the world. It's a voyage that tests both the limits of their endurance and their love for the thrill of exploration.
The Legacy of Cold-Water Surf Films
Ben Weiland and Brian Davis are no strangers to La Paloma Theater. Their previous film, Island X, also premiered at this iconic venue to a sold-out crowd, reinforcing their status as pioneers of cold-water surf documentaries. Island X went on to win the prestigious Best Surf Movie - Feature at the 2022 Florida Film Festival, cementing their reputation in the surf community. The Search For Volcano Island builds on that legacy with stunning visuals, heart-pounding moments, and a deep appreciation for nature's raw beauty. First Light Surf Club had the honor of MCing the premiere event, making it a night to remember.
A Night of Surf Culture at La Paloma Theater
From the moment the doors opened at La Paloma, the atmosphere was electric. Surf enthusiasts, filmmakers, and locals filled the theater, eagerly anticipating the film’s debut. As the lights dimmed and the film began, the crowd erupted in cheers, with every ride on screen met by applause and laughter—a testament to the passion and energy of the surf community. The film’s stunning cinematography and exhilarating surf scenes left the audience in awe, capturing the spirit of adventure that comes with cold-water surfing.
Behind the Scenes: Q&A with the Filmmakers
After the screening, the audience was treated to a Q&A session with Ben Weiland, Brian Davis, and two surfers featured in the film, Ricky and Nick. They shared behind-the-scenes stories of the challenges they faced while filming in Alaska's extreme conditions—everything from navigating freezing temperatures to battling unpredictable storms. The Q&A provided a rare glimpse into the dedication it takes to create films like this, as well as the filmmakers’ deep respect for the natural beauty of these untouched surf spots.
Raffle and Sponsors Support
No surf movie premiere would be complete without a raffle, and this event delivered. Thanks to the generous support of the film's sponsors—Seager, Beringia, Vaer, and Ferrell—the audience had the chance to win amazing prizes. First Light Surf Club also contributed gear, adding to the excitement of the evening. The raffle, combined with the film's inspiring message and the filmmakers’ insights, made for a truly unforgettable night at La Paloma.
